How does it work?

You don’t need a referral from your GP or medical specialist if you want to see a physiotherapist. Accessing physiotherapy is easy: you just need to register at FysioCity in Central Amsterdam.

The exact number of physiotherapy treatments you can claim depends on your insurance policy. Every insurance company offers a basic insurance and a number of supplementary insurance policies. A basic insurance policy covers 75% of the total cost for physiotherapy. If you have the relevant supplementary insurance your treatments are free. Depending on which company you use and the type of insurance you have, you can claim anywhere from 9 to 36 treatments a year.

Will physiotherapy be reimbursed?

Treatments for adults aged 18 and over are covered by health insurance as long as you have the appropriate supplementary insurance policy. All health insurers offer supplementary policies that include physiotherapy. Basic insurance policies cover all treatments for children under the age of 18 and patients with a chronic disease (in accordance with the chronic conditions list). Please note that for chronic conditions you will need supplementary insurance for the first 9 treatments, while all subsequent treatments are covered by your basic insurance policy.

How do I know my physiotherapist is certified?

A physiotherapy qualification is protected by law; the title of physiotherapist can’t just be used by anyone. Only a qualified physiotherapist that has been admitted into the BIG-register (a health professions council), can treat patients as an independent physiotherapist.
